Sustaining Collaboration within a Learning Community in Flexible Engineering Education
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper presents an innovative approach in flexible learning that can facilitate hands-on activities in engineering education. The approach focuses on the mediation role of artifacts within a learning community. The artifacts serve both as a medium and as a product of the collaboration process in the community. We have proposed the eJournal as a mediating artifact, which has been developed to support knowledge acquisition and reinforcement in a collaborative way. The eJournal is designed as a shared workspace that supplies different metrics for sharing, monitoring and evaluating the collaborative learning process in flexible hands-on activities. The eJournal is integrated into the Cockpit environment, which is currently used for various practical courses at the School of Engineering, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL).

This paper presents an innovative approach for sustaining the continuity of interaction in Web-based experimentation for engineering education. The approach is based on our work in Activity Theory and the CSCL’s shared artifacts concept. The theory is applied to the eJournal, the collaboration component within the Cockpit, a Web-based environment proposed to students for hands-on experimentatio...

متن کاملThe Cockpit: An Effective Metaphor for Web-based Experimentation in Engineering Education*
Web-based experimentation is a key feature in the deployment of eLearning solutions for engineering education. At the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL), Web-based experimentation is deployed thanks to a comprehensive environment called the Cockpit. This environment integrates all the components necessary to carry out hands-on practice in a flexible learning context. The C...
متن کاملComponent-based Design of a Flexible Environment Dedicated to Web-based Experimentation
Experimentation is an essential ingredient to sustain learning activities in engineering education. Nowadays many academic institutions are making great efforts to provide their students with standalone applications for Web-based simulation or remote manipulation of laboratory equipment. However, these resources are not really effective if deployed as such, without additional components which c...
